With football minicamps all ready here, Fantasy Football is on my mind. I've already started to break down each position, and over the next several weeks I'll share my rankings with all you. We'll start with the quarterback position, probably one of the weakest skilled positions this year.
I’ll start off my rankings with the Top 30 quarterback you need to know about going into your Fantasy Football draft. This week I’ll break down the bottom third of my quarterback draft board. There aren't many surprise at this point in the off season, but there sure are a ton of questions.
Lets drop back, look down field, and let the bombs drop.
30) Kurt Warner – Arizona Cardinals : Right now in minicamps, Kurt Warner has taken most of the snaps with the 1st team. Don't be fooled here. Warner will be the backup to Matt Leinart going into the season. A serviceable backup for Cardinals, the only way Warner makes it on your team is if you make a Sunday pickup with some extra cash because Leinart went down with a sprained eyebrow. My Projections : 1155 YDS – 8 TD's – 4 INT
29) Brodie Croyle – Kansas City Chiefs : Croyle is the type of quarterback you don't want on your Fantasy team. Why? Well, if you first look at his stats, Croyle is not the type of quarterback that'll get you many yards or touchdowns. He’s the type of quarterback that'll stock pile interceptions for your Fantasy team. Not a good combination. Here's the one plus I see for him. The Chiefs drafted several offensive players in this years draft included in that bunch was Branden Albert who's projected to take over the left tackle position. Now, if the offensive line can give him some time, Tony Gonzalez and Dwayne Bowe might have a chance to get open down field where they're most effective. My Projections : 1679 YDS – 14 TD's – 15 INT
28) Rex Grossman – Chicago Bears : Oh Chicago Bears fans. Where did the Rex Grossman of 2006 go? The 2007 season was a disaster and yet he's back in charge of the Bears offense in 2008. Is he really an NFL quarterback? I don't think so. Like Croyle, Grossman should not be on any Fantasy team(s), well that is unless you're apart of the Grossman family. Grossman has zero weapons at the wide receiver position, which means he'll see plenty of eight man fronts and different blitz packages forcing him to throw, which we all know isn’t his wrong suit. My Projections : 2312 YDS – 15 TD's – 17 INT
27) Kellen Clemens – New York Jets : We finally hit a quarterback that actually has some potential in the ’08 season. Clemens, according to many “Experts”, is the Jets quarterback of today and the future. With the addition of Pro-Bowl left guard Alan Faneca and a healthy Laveranues Coles, Clemens has no where to go but up. Here's the downside to Clemens, he might not win the starting job out of camp. This is a situation to watch throughout the pre-season, but to me, Clemens could work out to be a nice second quarterback on your team, especially during weeks four (Cardinals), six (Bengals), seven (Raiders) and eight (Chiefs). My Projections : 2578 YDS – 19 TD's – 15 INT
26) Trent Edwards – Buffalo Bills : “J.P. Must Go, J.P. Must Go,” were the words the crowd chanted last year before the Bills handed over the reigns of their offense to a rookie quarterback by the name of Trent Edwards. This year, Edwards should be ready to take his game to the next level. Oh who am I kidding. Many “Experts” feel like this could be a breakout year for Edwards. They're saying things like, “...the Bills had one of the toughest schedules last year and now in '08 they have the easiest.” Who cares? Edwards had one good game last year against...you guessed it, the Miami Dolphins. This guy might be better than J.P. Losman, but seriously, who isn't? My Projections : 2990YDS – 17 TD's – 17 INT
25) Jeff Garcia – Tampa Bay Buccaneers : Boring!!! That’s how I describe Jeff Garcia’s game now. Tampa Bay has asked Garcia not to lose the game for them, which means 250 yards a game is a fantasy for Garcia and his owners. The good news is, he won’t kill you Fantasy team. Don’t expect more than 17-20 touchdowns from Garcia. This is a guy you might want to pick up if you have one of the Top 10 quarterback on a bye-week, but that should be the only reason. My Projections : 2803 YDS – 16 TD's – 8 INT
24) JaMarcus Russell – Oakland Raiders : JaMarcus Russell has the tools to be a decent quarterback in the NFL. This off season the Raiders surrounded Russell with weapons (Darren McFadden and free-agent wide receiver Javon Walker). My problem with Russell is he hasn't showed much statistically on the field. Russell essential is a rookie quarterback this year after spending most of last year in a contract dispute and watching from the bench. The thing is, Russell can create, the films show that he can read the field well and the kid has shown that he can be a leader. I just don't feel this is the year he shines for your “Whalla Whalla Bing Bang” Fantasy Football team. My Projections : 3065 YDS – 18 TD's – 17 INT
23) Tarvaris Jackson – Minnesota Vikings : To me, this is a guy who could be a HUGE sleeper at the quarterback position. His last two games in '07 he started to show signs of the next coming of Donovan McNabb, minus all the injuries of course. The thing that concerns me the most about the development of Jackson is the Vikings wide receivers and lack of depth at the position. We all know what Adrian Peterson can do, but how will the wide receiver corp handle the pressure of having to get open. Jackson has a chance to score between three and seven touchdowns with his legs, the question still remains though, who's going to catch the ball? My Projections : 3079 YDS – 19 TD's – 15 INT – 6 RTD's
22) Alex Smith – San Francisco 49ers : Alex Smith meet Mike Martz, you know, the guy who helped Jon Kitna exceed more than 4,000 yards the last two years. If you can’t succeed in this offense you should be working right next to Ryan Leaf at the local burger joint. This is a make or break year for Smith. With the additions of Isaac Bruce and Bryant Johnson to along with up and coming tight end Vernon Davis, the pieces are in place to make Smith succeed. The big question is can Smith beat out Shaun Hill who is knocking on the door? I think so. Like Jackson, Smith could be one of those nice sleepers you pick late in the draft as your second quarterback and reap the benefits of the “Martz System”. My Projections : 3079 YDS – 22 TD's – 12 INT
21) Matt Leinart – Arizona Cardinals : It is really hard for me to have Leinart ranked this low, but until he can prove to me that he can stay on the field I really have no choice. In my opinion, I think Leinart has the potential to be a Top 10 quarterback in the NFL. The Cardinals have surrounded him with great weapons, and the kid really does have a golden arm. Injuries, and the potential contract extension of Kurt Warner looming in the background might effect Leinarts production. Oh ya, and if he can stay out of Paris Hilton’s home, that’d be a good thing too. Leinart could be a stud or a giant fart this year, it really depends on whether or not he can stay on the field. My Optimistic Projections : 3122 YDS – 23 TD's – 16 INT
