The New England team that showed up for the SuperBowl was not same team that dominated the entire regular season. That is an obvious statement! The team that played its way into the forty second running of Football's Greatest Contribution was anything but prepared. Here is my take on the reason for their downfall.
What happens to you personally if everyone you know says you are the best looking person on the planet? You know the answer to that question don't you? You will start to believe the hype, even if it is not true. You might look at yourself in the mirror more often, you might dress better and dare I say it, you may even begin to strut. In psychology terms such a change in behavior is called the SELF FULFILLING PROPHECY which basically suggests that if you believe a thing long enough, the thing you believe can cause changes. Sometimes the changes are for the better and sometimes they are hurtful.
The patriots were like the geeky Peter Parker who after being looked at by a beautiful stranger began to strut in his black suit as if he were John Travolta. This team was too cocky for their own good and the cockiness showed even before the final game. It appeared to me that New England felt they did not have to go all out right away. It appeared to me that Brady felt as if he could take it a bit slower because he was that good of a quarterback. He could always push his team into the end zone when it really, really mattered.
