Pending a physical and contract extension, Johan Santana was traded to the New York Mets for Carlos Gomez, Kevin Mulvey, Phil Humber, and Deolis Guerra. There is/was no one in the Mets farm system I wouldn't offer in exchange for Johan Santana, so the fact that the Mets did not have to part with uber-prospect Fernando Martinez or still highly touted prospect Mike Pelfrey is both mysterious and wonderful (that is, if you're a Mets fan, or an AL Central fan, or really an AL team not named the New York Yankees or Boston Red Sox). This trade really exposes how desperate GM Bill Smith was to trade Santana to an NL team, which begs the question, why didn't other NL teams speak up?
From what we know, the New York Yankees were offering Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera, and others, and the Boston Red Sox were offering Jon Lester, Jed Lowrie, and others, so the Mets offer was arguably inferior to both. Could the Dodgers, Diamondbacks, or Reds offered something better? I know the Diamondbacks just traded for Dan Haren, but their farm system is still stacked. Imagine a Webb, Santana, and Haren rotation. All right, enough of that, he’s likely a Met. The New York Mets are now easily the favorites in the NL East and in the National League. Their offense is potent, and now their rotation is the best, arguably, it’s been since the late 1980’s. I’m trying my best as a New York Mets fan to not gloat in this article, but it is really quite a trade for them, and a pretty weak return for the Twins. Below are player profiles of Carlos Gomez, Kevin Mulvey, Phil Humber, and Deolis Guerra.
