Up Ticks:
Paul Konerko, 1B, CHW
He is scheduled to come off the 15 day DL on Tuesday from his oblique strain.
Fantasy Impact: Don’t get swept up with his return helping your fantasy team. He has struggled for most of the first half of the season. Give him next week to get re-adjusted and shake the rust off; then see if he returns to the Paul Konerko of old or continues his slide of the first half.
Carlos Zambrano, SP CHC
He came off his 15 day DL stint last Friday vs. STL. He pitched 6 scoreless innings, walking 2 and struck out 5.
Fantasy Impact: Do not hesitate to activate him. He showed no signs of the shoulder being an issue vs. STL.
Felix Hernandez, SP SEA
He is scheduled to come off the 15 day DL from his ankle sprain in Fantasy week 15 and start either Thursday vs. OAK or Friday vs. KC.
Fantasy Impact: It looks like he will be good to go with one start this week. He had a similar layoff to Carlos Zambrano and I look for him to have a similar return. The only problem being he pitches for SEA and not a solid team like the Cubs. Activate him this week but temper your expectations.
Down Ticks:
Roy Oswalt, SP HOU
He left last Monday’s game vs. LAD with a strained left hip abductor muscle. He missed his next scheduled start on Saturday and has been pushed back indefinitely due to soreness he experienced Friday when attempting to throw off flat ground.
Fantasy Impact: The setback Friday was enough to get him a visit with the MD back in Houston on Saturday. He was originally scheduled to return Tuesday but this latest setback is concerning. Since he was sore on just flat ground throwing it may be more than they originally thought. Houston will be ultra careful with Oswalt so a DL stint looks likely. Reserve him for Fantasy week 15.
Troy Percival, RP TB
He was placed on the 15 day DL with a strained left hamstring last Tuesday after he injured it in the game vs. BOS.
Fantasy Impact: This is the second stint on the DL for the 38 year old veteran for the same hamstring over the past 6 weeks. Red flags all over. Feel free to drop him as a timely return seems unlikely.
Eric Byrnes, OF ARZ
He was placed on the 15 day DL last Tuesday with a strained left hamstring. One week after being activated from a DL stint from an injury to the right hamstring.
Fantasy Impact: 1 bad wheel on a speed guy is bad, 2 is devastating. This may be the beginning of the end for Byrnes as his hard nosed style of play starts to catch up to him physically at this stage of his career. With these injuries in 2008, I don’t see him regaining his 2007 fantasy status.
Matt Capps, RP PIT
He was placed on the DL last Wednesday with shoulder bursitis. They are projecting him to be out about 8 weeks.
Fantasy Impact: No need to even stash him in a DL spot. If he has any setbacks what so ever, they may shut him down for the rest of the year. If he does return in 8 weeks, he will still be pitching for the Pirates where saves are few and far between.
Rafael Furcal, SS LAD
He was transferred to the 60 day DL last Friday after undergoing microdiscectomy surgery to relieve the pressure on a disk in his lower back.
Fantasy Impact: I predict he is done for the season. You do not mess with backs; usually the more conservative treatment the better. Look for him to return in 2009.
Todd Helton, 1B, COL
He was placed on the 15 day DL last Friday with a sore back.
Fantasy Impact: He has had a very unlike Todd Helton year in 2008, especially of late. This DL stint may be a play by Colorado to get him right physically in order to trade him in late July. Stay Turned.
